USA & Canada Visit - week 3
Week 3 has seen us visiting three places:
- Manassas, Virginia
- Washington, Pennsylvania
- Dayton, Ohio
In this post I'll tell you something about each of those (with a photo or two), tell you about the "session" we do, and mention some sight-seeing we've done too.
Manassas, Virginia
We were hosted by Amy from Buckhall United Methodist Church. We did an evening event about "Jesus - the greatest treasure" with a mix of children's songs, David's testimony about leaving BA, and Clare speaking about the Countess of Huntingdon (who had Methodist links). There weren't many children there, hence the adult content!
Washington, Pennsylvania
A five hour drive from Virginia took us to Washington PA, with Fred & Robin at Calvary Baptist Church.
Here David & Maynard did a 40 minute session with kids at the Faith Christian Elementary School in the morning,
and then an full hour session at an outreach event for kids and their parents in the evening at the church.
Dayton, Ohio
A much quicker drive, thanks to the Interstate Highway. We stayed with Betsy & Galen, and had a busy Sunday at their church, Corinth Presbyterian Church.
First David preached at their morning service,
Then, after a great brunch with the church family, we did a Kids event.
The Session
The main "thing" I'm doing with kids in each school / church is a one hour session called "Jesus, the greatest treasure!"
It features several songs from maynardsgroovytunes.co.uk/jukebox, two bible passages, three interactive games with the children, a video "live" interview, and of course, Maynard. It is going down really well, and the kids are left in no doubt that Jesus is brilliant! If you've been to a holiday club session at St Lawrence or Hotfrog with us, you'll know the kind of thing we do. The big difference in the US is that it's all new to them, so they love it even more!
In some places the session is cut down to 40 minutes, and we (Clare, Maynard and I) have some other things we can add in as well.
Sight Seeing
We've had a chance to see some great things around the place, but the best thing is meeting the lovely people who host us, getting to know them, sharing stories of ministry and generally being encouraged and encouraging!
A highlight this week has been Aviation Museums! We visited the Smithsonian museum at Dulles Airport, Washington, where they have a Space Shuttle, and then the National Airforce Museum at Dayton Ohio. Dayton is where Orville and Wilbur Wright lived, and there is a lot of aviation still in the area. Here are David and Maynard at Carillon Park in Dayton, where they have an original Wright Flyer from 1905:
